Austin grew up along the Gulf Coast and currently resides in Sonoma County Wine Country. After receiving his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1988, Austin spent the next few years working as a design engineer.

In 1991 he made the decision to pursue a law degree. While attending law school, he worked full time. Austin graduated from Suffolk University Law School, Boston, in 1995 where he was a member of the Law Review and multiple time Dean's List honoree. After graduating law school, Austin relocated to southern California and served as VP of Business Development and then became CEO of a Bay Area internet company.

In 2001, he began practicing law full time, using his work experience in the business world to assist his clients. He has written and published legal articles for national organizations and their websites, as well as local non-profit groups. Austin has served on several boards and is an active volunteer in his community.
